80 years of friendship between Canada and the Netherland

We proudly celebrate 80 years of friendship between Canada and the Netherlands — a bond built on history, gratitude, and shared values. From the birth of Princess Margriet here in Ottawa during the Second World War, to the heroic role Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands, our nations share a deep and lasting connection.

It was an honour to welcome Margriet Vonno, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canada, to City Hall to raise the Dutch flag in recognition of this special relationship. I was also pleased to officially proclaim May 5, 2025, as Canada–The Netherlands Friendship Day in Ottawa.
